Double standard
Dear Editor:
Lebanon's Western-backed March 14 coalition has defeated a stiff challenge by the Hezbollah-led opposition in national elections to retain its parliamentary majority. The March 14 bloc's win will reassure its supporters in Washington and Saudi Arabia, while the opposition defeat is a blow for Iran and Syria, which support Hezbollah and were hoping to counter U.S. influence in Lebanon.
When they elected a pro-Communist president, Eisenhower sent in the Marines. And Lebanon's had nothing but grief ever since. And the same thing happened in Vietnam. When it looked like they were about to have a pro-Communist government there, the U.S. stepped in to make sure they didn't.Because of America's double standard in regard to Israel, whenever an American president or his representative speaks on any international topic, the words are discounted. The world knows that we have a double standard. The world knows that our word is no good.
